Cold Compression Therapy After Shoulder Surgery

Shoulder surgery can temporarily make everyday tasks difficult, particularly when your dominant arm is affected or your movement is restricted by a sling.

NICE1 provides controlled cold and adjustable compression through a wrap shaped around the shoulder. Its iceless design removes the repeated lifting, filling and emptying associated with traditional ice-based machines.

Reserve a NICE1 machine with a shoulder wrap for convenient cold and compression therapy at home after surgery. Available for 2- or 4-week rental throughout New Zealand.

Why Shoulder Cold Therapy Can Be Difficult

The shoulder has a rounded shape and a wide area around the joint. Standard ice packs can move out of position, provide uneven contact or require someone to hold them in place.

The NICE1 Total Shoulder Wrap is designed to fit around the shoulder joint, upper arm and shoulder-blade region. This provides more complete coverage than a small, flat ice pack.

You may initially need assistance applying the wrap, particularly if one arm is immobilised. Ask your healthcare professional how the wrap should be incorporated into your sling and rehabilitation instructions.

Controlled Cold Without Repeated Ice Refills

NICE1 circulates temperature-controlled water through the shoulder wrap. The machine has five fixed cold levels:

  • Level 1: 14.4°C
  • Level 2: 12.4°C
  • Level 3: 10°C
  • Level 4: 7.7°C
  • Level 5: 5.5°C

The selected cold level is maintained throughout the session. Compression can be set to low, medium or high and delivered constantly or intermittently.

Always follow your surgeon’s advice about temperature, compression, session length and frequency.

Shoulder Procedures NICE1 May Be Used After

People may consider a NICE1 shoulder rental following:

  • Rotator cuff repair
  • Total or reverse shoulder replacement
  • Shoulder arthroscopy
  • Labral repair
  • Shoulder stabilisation surgery
  • Biceps-tenodesis procedures
  • Other shoulder procedures where cold therapy is recommended

NICE1 is an addition to your prescribed recovery plan. It does not replace medication, sling use, wound care, physiotherapy or movement restrictions.

Is NICE1 an Ice Machine?

People frequently search for an “ice machine after shoulder surgery.” NICE1 is an iceless cold therapy machine: it provides circulated cold water through a fitted wrap without needing to be repeatedly loaded with ice.

This can be particularly practical for a shoulder patient who may have only one hand available for everyday tasks.

Simple Touchscreen Operation

The NICE1 touchscreen allows you to:

  • Choose one of five cold levels
  • Select the compression level
  • Choose constant or intermittent compression
  • Set a manual session from 5–40 minutes
  • Select a preset programme
  • Dim the display when required

Rapid Recovery provides instructions and support throughout the rental, but your clinical settings should come from your healthcare professional.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can NICE1 be used after rotator cuff surgery?

It may be used where cold therapy is included in the recovery instructions provided by your surgeon or healthcare professional.

Does the shoulder wrap fit either shoulder?

Confirm the required side and fit when booking. Rapid Recovery can help ensure the appropriate wrap configuration is supplied. Shoulder Wraps are specific to the left or right shoulder.

Can I wear the wrap over my sling?

The wrap needs appropriate contact with the treatment area. Follow your surgeon’s instructions about removing or adjusting your sling during therapy.

Will I need help putting it on?

Some patients may need assistance applying the shoulder wrap, especially during the early sling period.

Does the machine require ice?

No. NICE1 has an internal cooling system and does not require repeated ice refills.

How long is each session?

The machine supports manual sessions from 5–40 minutes and preset programmes. Your healthcare professional should determine how you use it.
